Looking forward to the balloons and birthday cake! I wouldn't object to a name change, but would observe that some of the options feel more 'me' than others (bibliometrics is a core part of my role, research analytics definitely sits elsewhere in my institution...) Perfectly reasonable for the committee to choose if it wants to embrace a particular direction, but if the motive is to reflect the existing composition of the group then a poll might be a useful option? I am happy enough with the current name but I am a librarian whose focus tends to be "bibliometrics". If a change goes ahead, I would support one of Katie's suggestions, "Research Metrics Practitioners Network" or "Research Evaluation Practitioners Network". Unless we feel we need to maintain a LIS-focused 'space' that is separate from colleagues in other areas? As this is such a dynamic area, do we need to be wary of the fact that any name change may itself become obsolete before too long? Regards, David. We have The Bibliomagician Blog, so perhaps the group could be the Bibliomagicians? Or we could go for plainer name like: Research Metrics Practitioners Network or Research Evaluation Practitioners Network. One of the items we discussed was our next conference which will mark ten years since the inception of Lis-Bibliometrics. The theme of this event will be 'the future of research evaluation' and will offer something of a retrospective and an horizon-scanning exercise - more on this to follow. In line with this, it was questioned whether the name of the list, 'Lis-Bibliometrics', was still a good fit for our community. Clearly it is an established 'brand' so we wouldn't want to abandon it without careful consideration. However, we recognise that our community may not all be 'LIS (Library & Information Science)' or even 'bibliometrics' focussed. Research evaluation activities are broader than bibliometrics, and many metrics are not 'biblio'. But we wanted to put this to the community for comment before any decisions were made. So, what do you think? Stick with Lis-Bibliometrics or adopt a new name for a new decade? All thoughts and suggestions welcome!
