We are seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to coordinate and undertake research on “Ports Past and Present: Cultural Crossings between Ireland and Wales” (PPP), a 4-year project funded through
the Ireland Wales 2014-2020 European Territorial Co-operation (ETC) programme, which receives funds through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The successful candidate will be based in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University, coordinating activities and undertaking research, as well as contributing to work packages
led by our project partners. The successful candidate will work with Professor Peter Merriman and Professor Rhys Jones at Aberystwyth University, as well as working closely with the lead partner University College Cork, and the University of Wales Trinity
Saint David and Wexford County Council.
The post-holder will be responsible for undertaking extensive research, data collection, and analysis on the histories of 5 Irish Sea ports and their communities in Wales and
Ireland (Holyhead, Fishguard, Pembroke Dock, Dublin and Rosslare), as well as the long history of journeys through these ports between Ireland and the UK. The project will involve detailed coordination with the three other project partners and other key project
stakeholders in Ireland and Wales. Amongst other activities, the Aberystwyth team will be leading work package 3, which involves researching and overseeing the production of film documentaries on the heritage of the five ports in collaboration with documentary
film-makers. A key aim of the project will be to use the use the history of the ports to engage local stakeholders with a view to promoting heritage led regeneration.
The project will involve travel in Wales and Ireland, and the successful candidate will need to have a full valid UK Driving Licence or equivalent right to drive in the UK.
