Medical Statistician (Research Assistant/Research Fellow) , - Ref: 1813100 UCL Department / Division: MRC Clinical Trials Unit at UCL Location of position: London Grade: 6-7 Hours: Full Time Salary (inclusive of London allowance): Grade 6: £30,922 - £32,607 per annum / Grade 7: £35,328 - £42,701 per annum Join one of the country's leading Clinical Trials Units The MRC Clinical Trials Unit at University College London is amongst the country's foremost clinical trials units and a centre of excellence for challenging and innovative studies, and developing and implementing new methodologies. The Unit undertakes world-class research, and we are committed to strengthening and expanding the evidence base for healthcare both nationally and internationally, delivering innovative research that can really make a difference. We are looking to recruit enthusiastic statisticians, to play a central role in ground-breaking clinical trials, observational studies and/or individual participant data IPD meta-analyses. The opportunities encompass statistical input and support for high profile, international clinical trials, cohort studies and IPD meta-analyses in cancer and infections, to speed up the evaluation of treatments for patients' ultimate benefit. These roles involve working within friendly multi-disciplinary teams on studies within the CTU's Infections, Cancer and Methodology themes. The Infections studies include: STREAM, a large non-inferiority regulatory trial in multi-drug resistant tuberculosis and Paediatric observational cohort studies: EPPICC (HIV) and REACH. The Cancer studies include: STAMPEDE, a large multi-arm adaptive trial in advanced prostate cancer, Add-Aspirin a large BASKET trial testing the effects of aspirin in 4 types of cancer; and STOPCAP, a series of pairwise and network IPD meta-analyses in advanced prostate cancer. The successful candidates will work either on trials, observational studies, IPD meta-analyses, or a combination of these, depending on interest, skills and experience, working as part of a wider group of statisticians, with opportunities for skills and career development, both in statistics and more broadly in research careers. Duties of the role will include: - Responsibility for statistical aspects of the studies, including conducting analyses, preparing and presenting reports, interpreting results, preparing conference abstracts and papers for peer reviewed journals. - Day to day management of statistical aspects of the studies - Provision of statistical advice on the development of new research proposals - For newly funded proposals - assisting in the development of case report forms, standard operating procedures for data mergers and data checking (for cohort studies and IPD meta-analysis), specifications for analysis datasets, and the study database. - Developing knowledge of the biology and epidemiology of relevant disease areas. - Working on methodological problems, in collaboration with interested colleagues, and depending on personal interest. - Participating in teaching and in the statistical review of papers. Initial grant funding for these roles runs to 31st December 2020 in the first instance. Key Requirements: The successful candidates will have an enthusiastic approach, excellent communication skills, and proven ability to prioritise and work to deadlines. They should have a good understanding of statistical concepts and familiarity with one or more statistical packages. Practical experience of statistical methods in analysing trial, observational cohort data, and/or meta-analyses based on IPD would be an advantage, as would experience of working with multi-disciplinary teams and preparing/presenting reports.
