What’s right with showing off? At a time when the opportunities for self-display and fears around who is looking abound, this study day invites CDP and other postgraduate students or early career researchers working within different cultures and contexts of display and exhibition to unpack the social anxieties and desires around exhibitionism and voyeurism.

Taking inspiration from Carol Queen’s seminal self-help book Exhibitionism for the Shy: Dress Up, Talk Hot and Show Off! (1995) the day stages conversations and experiments around where, when and how exhibitionism and voyeurism intersect with different sites of exhibition and display. Our setting is the museum, but researchers working broadly with notions of performance and display – from art, theatre, music, live art, sport, education, religion and beyond – are invited into a conversation about what it is to look and be looked at. Invited contributors include wrestling researcher Claire Warden and performance artist Harold Offeh who will lead an informal meet up and observation task at Uniqlo Late at Tate Modern on Friday, which we will revisit on Saturday.

We aim to support those living outside London to attend as best we can: a limited number of travel bursaries will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Please contact [log in to unmask][log in to unmask] by Monday 22 July 2019 if you would like to be considered.

Schedule:

Friday 30 August: 18.00-21.00 - Terrace Bar, Level 1, Blavatnik Building, Tate Modern

Saturday 31 August: 10.15-17.00 - McAulay Studio, Level 0, Tate Modern
