Hi Mark,
It's been a while since we did this, but you should be able to create a APEL service for your existing vac entry in the gocdb (vac.ph.bham.ac.uk (uk.ac.gridpp.vac), which would be the more correct way of doing things. I think it's still a bodge, but it's the correct bodge.

For example our old vac service:

Had this corresponding APEL service:
https://goc.egi.eu/portal/index.php?Page_Type=Service&id=8053

Please can someone yell if I'm talking rubbish though.
