Cool question.

I suppose it might depend how posh your house was and what dogs / domestic staff might be about as to the locking system used. I would think many communities simply left their doors open too – growing up in Barnsley / Sheffield we left the door open all the time and most neighbours did too. It is still common for a l neighbour to just let themselves in in Barnsley!.

I think you might find grander Georgian houses on streets that still have the same door with locks on. Collection wise, do have evidence of locks being used especially Joseph Bramah from Barnsley invented the un-pickable lock for doors:

Hello all,

One of our enquirers asked – Did people lock their doors at night in the 1820s? Our thoughts are that whilst the door was unlikely to have an integral lock, there may have been some form of barring.

Does anyone have in their collections, an early 19th century door belonging to a domestic residence that would corroborate this?

Kind regards

Micahla
