Title: Characterization of backbones of
complex networks in socio-economic and
socio-technical systems
Abstract:
The project plans to study and analyze
complex networks in socio-economic and
socio-technical systems. In
particular we will use the methodology
of the statistically validated networks to
identify the backbone of the
network linking pairs of elements and small
groups of elements (clusters) that are
over-expressed with respect to a
null hypothesis of statistical nature that
takes into account the heterogeneity of the
complex system considered.
We will also devote special care in
highlighting the avoided interactions between
nodes. Our approach will
produce statistically validated signed networks.
These signed networks will be investigated by
using the theory of
structural balance. The project requires
pre-processing, analysis and interpretation of
large amounts of data that
describe the systems of interest. The analysis
will be carried out using concepts and
methodologies of the theory of
complex networks.
