medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Perhaps tangentially related, but I immediately think of the Adoration of the Mystical Lamb from the Ghent Altarpiece. The central (paradisical) panel shows a sylvan landscape with the Domtor of Utrecht cathedral (among other urban buildings) in the background. Note that Adam and Eve appear facing the Lamb in the upper panels. Also, the building depicted on the East Meon font (which I've been fortunate enough to have seen in situ) reminds me a little of the Romanesque Overstoltz house in Cologne. If I remember correctly, they were a banking family (?). Don't know if the dates align, but this might lend credence to the idea that moneychangers are being referenced?

Dear Gordon,

I no of no other examples of this iconographic peculiarity, but Louis Reau points out that the Expulsion from Eden was related exegetically to Expulsion of the Moneychangers from the Temple.  The structure at right might just as easily represent the Temple as a city.  Another iconographic peculiarity is that the narrative of the font seems to run from right to left.

A very interesting work!

Cheers,

Jim

On the 12th-century Tournai marble font at East Meon in Hampshire the Expulsion scene shows the angel with the flaming sword driving Adam & Eve from
what is recognisably a city - see my image on Flickr here:

Learned ones, do you know of any other examples of this and can you suggest the origin of this iconographical peculiarity?
