medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dominic and his bishop Diego of Osma are each named vir dei in Jordan of Saxony's Libellus (1233). None of the other friars are so described, however.

In an early monastic context, the term was used for St. Benedict and disciples who approximated his holiness.

Meg,

I ran the term through the Patrologia Latina Database. Not all uses of vir dei are for saints. However, I saw none for living clergy.

Greetings all,
In the Middle Ages, would it be fair to say that the term 'vir dei' was used exclusively of saints, as opposed to other members of the clergy? when did the meaning as simply 'clergyman' , i.e. the modern 'man of God' become common?
Thanks for your input,
Meg
