Archivist Amanda Hill said the archives “grew out” of the Hastings County
Historical Society, which had been collecting local and provincial
historical material since 1957 - and moved into their current space at the
library three years ago.

“Eventually, there was so much material that volunteers couldn’t really run
it anymore. They needed a professionally set up organization,” Hill
explained.

“The Historical Society campaigned and persuaded the City of Belleville and
the County of Hastings to partner with them (in 2010) to create a whole new
archives. It’s a combination of the collections that the Historical Society
gathered and the city’s own archives, the County archives and the archives
of all the different municipalities in Hastings County.”

how I should live my life, since I’m so obviously incapable of deciding for
myself.” M. Hashimoto
