Abstract:
This talk will present the findings from an on-line survey on mental health and travel carried out by the Centre for Transport Studies at UCL survey and launch the written report containing the evidence.
About 25% of the population has been diagnosed with at least one mental illness. This can make travel difficult by affecting the ability to interpret information, to concentrate, and to have the confidence to take decisions and interact with other people.
385 people responded to the survey. They all indicated that they have one or more mental health conditions, 90% having anxieties and 68% suffering from depression. Over a third are frequently prevented from leaving home by their illness. The main causes of anxiety are the behaviour and attitudes of other people and finding the way without becoming lost.
A number of recommendations will be made based on evidence from the survey.
