Well done all who helped push this view forwards

Yes, I saw this in with the Council papers. I have been saying for years that the practice of OHNs/SNs/HVs are so very different and that shared learning for many years, even back to when our course was delivered at the RCN and we moved to LSBU 19 years ago. It was great that the early developers of FOHNEU and SOM have all helped with lobbying the NMC and those who were interviewed re their beliefs were of the same opinion.

Now lets see what happens next.

Good news because at long last the NMC recognise that the ‘standards are not fit for purpose’. Some quotes from the report below:

4.11 - In contrast those interviewed that represented Occupational Health felt little affiliation to the third part of the register and were generally dissatisfied with the SCPHN standards and recognised that more relevant non NMC-approved educational programmes would be better suited to develop the confidence and practical skills OH nurses need to be ready to meet the needs of a diverse workplace. Only nine AEIs offer the programme and challenges in finding practice educators and securing placements exacerbates the consolidation of learning.
And
3.30 - While students and registrants did identify components that were helpful for all three professions (such as the high level public health context and approaches, and external speakers for example talking about domestic violence) many felt that more time could be dedicated to their specific qualification and the clinical skills it requires. This view was particularly strong amongst Occupational Health nurses, who unanimously felt that their profession was too divergent from school nursing and health visiting for the shared curriculum to have value.

Some of us on this forum have been campaigning for years for NMC evaluation of these standards so it is good news indeed that OH views are finally acknowledged, although of course actions speak louder than words.
