The point I was making is that you can belong to both unions simultaneously, so midwives can join UCU without leaving RCM.

This isn’t relevant to the discussion about research, though.

Moving to RCM membership for those of us not practising clinically, Alison raises a point Alison, but it is an individual choice as to which trade union you belong and where you see yourself best fitting.

I have been in education for over 30 years and never been influenced by my HEI employers to move my membership from the RCM. I still see myself as a midwife first and foremost practising in education.

Where my academic colleagues have required TU support the local RCM stewards have been more than supportive due to having Honorary Contracts with Trust providers.

Maybe if the RCM were to consider their conferences reflected ALL aspects of the multi/faceted roles of “the practising midwife”, ALL members would then feel included.

Best wishes

Sorry for coming in late on this discussion...

There is also an issue which I repeatedly see in that midwives are sometimes only seen as being 'practising' midwives if they practise clinically. With the new #futuremidwife vision coming in to play, it is quite clear that practising midwives don't just catch babies. As I am sure you all know, future midwifery careers will encourage practising midwives to enjoy roles in commissioning, consultancy, education, research management, policy, inspection, quality assurance as well as direct patient care.

I have been a practising midwife in academia without a HoM for some time now. It seems that some areas are slow to catch up with this reality in the midwifery profession. I hope the world can catch up soon as this is an area I feel most passionately about. To move this thinking forward, I wrote the following article in the Conversation: https://theconversation.com/oh-baby-seven-things-you-probably-didnt-know-about-midwives-77128

Well done everyone for such a productive and respectful discussion on this matter. I am sure the best is yet to come.

There are two separate issues here. Universities don't recognise RCM and other professional unions for trades union purposes. In response to this, UCU offers a reduced rate joint membership with relevant health and other unions.

On the other hand, this debate is about RCM's professional role and the extent to which midwife researchers are involved in multidisciplinary research in collaboration with members of other professions.

You have to be an RCM member - they ask for your membership number.
I was advised to leave the RCM when I moved over to academia but I stayed as 50% of my job is clinical. It seems like it needs a bit more thought.
