Programme

11 a.m. Registration and refreshments

11:30 a.m. Michael Upshall (UNSILO and ConsultMU)
The new AI for publishing: hype or game-changer?
Previous presentations Michael Upshall has delivered about AI in publishing have been at innovation and technology meetings. AI was regarded as a technology of the future, and for some in the audience it was a future they hoped would never arrive. In this presentation, Michael talks about how AI can deliver solutions now, providing answers to publishing challenges for researchers, students and information professionals. He will consider whether this kind of AI supplements or replaces taxonomies and classification systems, and what the role of information professionals should be when dealing with this new technology.

12:30 p.m. Lunch

1:30 p.m. UKeiG AGM

2:15 p.m. David Haynes (City University)
Is there a role for AI in information resource management?
A lot of the current discussion around artificial intelligence is about AI versus humans. However, information professionals have another narrative about AI as an adjunct to human activity. The test of this is whether this improves the performance of information systems. In this presentation David will talk briefly about his exploration of the process of ontology building as an example of an information management activity that might benefit from AI. The rest of the session will take the form of a workshop to identify situations where AI is used or could be used to improve the management of information resources.

3:15 p.m. Tony Russell-Rose (UX Labs)
An introduction to Natural Language Processing (NLP) and AI
Tony recently taught a full semester course on Natural Language Processing at the University of Notre Dame. NLP is a branch of computer science that deals with the computational analysis of linguistic data and the development of applications that process human language data. This presentation will provide an overview of NLP, review some of the ways in which it affects our everyday lives and explore practical ways in which we can all engage with this fascinating and rapidly growing subfield of AI.

4:15 p.m. until 5 p.m. Networking with wine and nibbles.

Please note: There is a small charge of £20 for non-members.
