We currently require all interlibrary loan transactions to go through a staff member, and we would like to offer better customer service by allowing more self-service options, especially outside staffed hours:

• When issuing, it would be handy for clients to collect a book from open shelves (as they do with reserved books from our own stock) and use the self-service kiosks, instead of asking a member of staff to fetch it from behind the scenes.
• When returning, it would be handy for clients to use the automated returns sorter instead of handing the book to a member of staff.

What are other institutions doing here, and is it even permitted? 

We realise that there may be an increased risk of other institutions' books going missing and being damaged. There may also be issues around having to have another RFID tag in order to enable self-issue and self-return. We think some institutions may require their items to be handled by our library staff rather than using self-service.
