Dear Leon,

We don't allow Inter Library Loans borrowed from other Libraries to be self issued or self returned. They are kept behind the desk and have to be handed out by library staff and returned to staff rather than to a book bin, so the service is only available during service desk hours. I would agree with other colleagues that ILL items should not be for self service.

Dear Leon,

I would agree with Alison, Anything that involves an increased risk of our material going missing or being damaged is not acceptable. We take great care with Inter-Library Loan books and would prefer them to be handed to a reader by a staff member who can advise them of the lending conditions attached to the book.

Kind Regards

Margo

Dear Leon

We would not be happy for our books to be part of a self-service system. We do not permit any ILL books to be loaned for home or offsite use anyway and would like them to be handed to the reader by staff (who can advise them about copying, the return date etc. also) - They should not have access to them without supervision. Anything that involves an increased risk of our material going missing or being damaged is not acceptable.

Please let me know if you decide to go ahead with this.

Best wishes

Alison

Subject: Self-service interlibrary loan transactions

Hello all,

We currently require all interlibrary loan transactions to go through a staff member, and we would like to offer better customer service by allowing more self-service options, especially outside staffed hours:

  * When issuing, it would be handy for clients to collect a book from open shelves (as they do with reserved books from our own stock) and use the self-service kiosks, instead of asking a member of staff to fetch it from behind the scenes.
  * When returning, it would be handy for clients to use the automated returns sorter instead of handing the book to a member of staff.

What are other institutions doing here, and is it even permitted?

We realise that there may be an increased risk of other institutions' books going missing and being damaged. There may also be issues around having to have another RFID tag in order to enable self-issue and self-return. We think some institutions may require their items to be handled by our library staff rather than using self-service.

Any feedback welcome, either direct to me or to the list.

Many thanks,

Leon
