Conversation: 'Not today but yesterday and tomorrow' - On Italian Literature in the films of Straub-Huillet From ‘Fortini/Cani’ (1976) to ‘Sicilia!’ (1998), ‘Dalla nube alla resistenza’ (From the Clouds to the Resistance,1978) to ‘Quei loro incontri’ (These Encounters of Theirs, 2005), Italy and Italian literature played a signal role in Straub and Huillet's filmmaking. This conversation between Gabriele Pedullà (Rome) and Alberto Toscano (London) – accompanied by the screening of some of Jean-Marie Straub's shorts also drawn Italian texts – will explore Huillet and Straub's renderings of Cesare Pavese’s ‘Dialogues with Leucò’ and Elio Vittorini’s ‘Conversations in Sicily’, as well as their encounter with Franco Fortini and his polemical memoir ‘The Dogs of the Sinai’, asking how their cinematic practice both transposed and displaced some of the political and aesthetic concerns of postwar Italian literature. GABRIELE PADULLÁ is associate professor of Italian Literature at the University of Roma Tre and has been visiting professor at Stanford, UCLA, the Ecole Normale Supérieure (Lyon), and Harvard. He is the author of In Broad Daylight: Movies and Spectators after the Cinema, Machiavelli in Tumult, and the novel Lame. ALBERTO TOSCANO is Reader in Critical Theory and Co-Director of the Centre for Philosophy and Critical Thought at Goldsmiths, University of London. He is the author of Fanaticism: On the Uses of an Idea, Cartographies of the Absolute (with Jeff Kinkle), and the editor and translator of Franco Fortini’s The Dogs of the Sinai and A Test of Powers. Screening: Fortini/Cani Fortini/Cani is based on Franco Fortini’s book ‘The Dogs of Sinai’ (1967), a reflection on politics, identity, and truthfulness in the period after the Six Day War of 1967. Fortini, a Jewish communist and a major figure in postwar Italian intellectual life, reflects on his own identity as a Jew and a communist, and about the birth of fascism and the increasing anti-Arabic influence in Europe. Straub and Huillet film Fortini reading from his own text together with images of landscapes shot in the Apuan Alps, where years earlier atrocities against the partisans had been committed by the Nazis.
