You need to be very careful indeed.
If you offer 'payment' or 'remuneration' of any kind, including non-monetary rewards, according to HMRC & DWP your volunteers are no longer volunteers and their tax and benefits status will be impacted, as well as your liability to pay them NMW. This can matter especially to people on low incomes, who can be brutally penalized for errors in these areas.
Concentrate instead on covering absolutely all evidence-able expenses including travel, and look at childcare if you can.

Subject: Best practice on remuneration and community engagement

Dear hive mind,

I am looking for best practice examples of remuneration for community engagement with marginalised communities. Have you been able to offer payment or in kind compensation for research? There's a lot of information out their about participatory methods with engagement but I can't seem to find much on the ethics and practice of remuneration for work.

Thanks in advance!
