This is a call for papers for a Special Issue of open access journal Sustainability<https://www.mdpi.com/journal/sustainability> (IF: 2.075).The cfp invites manuscripts that offer critical cross-disciplinary examination of the perverse and unintended economic, environmental, and resource conservation outcomes of sustainable development and 'eco-friendly' practices. Of course, it also welcomes work outlining measures to resolve the challenges these outcomes present.

Each day, individuals, households, universities, local bodies, and national governments are exhorted to be more self-sufficient, to consume less, and to be 'environmentally sustainable'. In the rush to sustainability, less critical consideration appears to be given to long-term, unintended and contradictory consequences of, for example, widespread adoption of domestic solar panels and batteries, electric cars, and so-called Tiny Homes. In addition to producing complex new questions and dilemmas, the paradoxical outcomes of activities intended to 'save the planet' may diminish faith in the promise and prospect of addressing emerging and future ecological crises. Sustainability may certainly be a useful ambition for meeting future environmental challenges but only if the practices we pursue in its name do indeed yield sustainable solutions.
