Couldn't agree more. If we were attempting to assess the value of something one of us had produced, "impact" would be a lousy way to do it. Granted, it's what's done in academia, but I didn't read the original query as necessarily an effort to build academic rep. There are a great many ways to get one's work noticed by the public at large, and very few of them follow established academic channels. Self-publishing is one (but only one) of those ways, although Lambert probably isn't the best choice here. Two colleagues of mine and I run a workshop every year at SfAA dealing with bringing the work of anthropologist practitioners to a wider (ie, non-academic) audience, and if anyone would like to see the materials, let me know. It's a very tricky subject how one can resist this tendency, and early career scholars volunteering their work into vanity publishers as Lambert are not in the best position to do that. But that said, especially senior/tenured scholars should really think of how much they try to fit these impact criteria, and reinforce them in recruitment processes, and that is a very serious conversation we need to have across the discipline.
