Dear ZOOARCH (& apologies for cross-postings),

Historic England is offering some bursaries for free places for professional archaeologists to attend the UK Archaeological Sciences (UKAS) biennial conference to be held in Manchester 24th – 26th April.

We hope to attract specialists who might have limited access to CPD events, whether they are freelance or based in commercial units, and who would benefit from financial assistance.

We are also trying to attract professional archaeologists who may not consider themselves scientists, so that they can network with people and find out more about how they can integrate scientific investigations into their projects.

Details in the attached flier and pasted below:

Best wishes

Sue Stallibrass

Historic England supported Bursaries available for Commercial Sector Archaeologists

STILL TIME TO APPLY!

In order to facilitate a holistic and open access approach to the study, protection and enjoyment of the country’s historic environment Historic England are keen to prioritise the need for better communication and engagement of academic and commercial archaeologists, at the local, regional and national levels; this is a particular issue for scientific aspects of our heritage.

It is well known that project managers working in commercial units and specialists working either within a unit or freelance tend to receive little financial support to attend Continuing Professional Development events. This exacerbates a divide between academic researchers and commercial practitioners, and restricts the knowledge exchange required to transfer and implement new methods, techniques and research questions.

Therefore, through support from Historic England, we are able to offer a limited number of bursaries to enable commercial practitioners to attend UKAS 2019 in Manchester in order to facilitate and enhance the integration of scientific research with commercial archaeology. These bursaries will cover the conference fee as well as offer up to £300 for travel and accommodation, depending on particular circumstances. Commercial archaeologists applying for this bursary are still able, but not required, to submit abstracts for poster presentations at point of application. To apply, please email a completed Application Form to [log in to unmask] by Friday 12th April.
