Hi, Ilona: Well, a fairly thorough search of the Internet does not produce any image of a horse skeleton in the position of sternal recumbency. I can produce such an illustration for you, but you will have to pay for my time. Go to my website at www.jayhawkartandimage.com if you’re interested in that (so you can browse through the seventeen galleries of images to familiarize yourself with my style of illustration and scientific photography). I’ll also have to say, I’ve been somewhat disappointed in how some folks who I have been kind to have treated me with respect to illustrations. Of course I know you’re an academician or else a graduate student, and therefore automatically on a limited budget. I say this because I’ve been there too. So anybody who is a member of the Zooarch list and wants or needs an illustration can write to me and I will cut you the lowest possible rate. I say I’ve been disappointed and that’s for two reasons: (1) Apparent low interest in producing papers that contain illustrations that are not only accurate but beautiful (the new “3D” images produced by geometric morphometrics make me cringe, frankly); (2) Lack of engagement on the part of people who have asked for illustrations. To produce a good scientific illustration, it takes a lot of back-and-forth dialogue between artist and scientist/prospective author – it is not grown-up behavior when the latter just drops out or just disappears after I have already put a number of hours into the work, as I’ve had a couple of them do. This has caused me to have to ask for at least part of the money up front. Let me know off list if you want me to assist you in producing an illustration. But if you have both, it will be easier to be sure of it! All the best, Ilona.
