Though I am pursuing the registered design number to try to identify the provenance for the fireplace too. I have contacted a brick expert re the locomotive image, fingers crossed! It looks like that to me, from the pics, but it is hard to tell. If so, I'm assuming that the firebrick could have been made by a completely different firm (e.g. a brickworks rather than a foundry?) to the cast iron grate, in which case investigating the Rd number cast into the back of the grate would be a red herring (if, that is, you are principally interested in the locomotive maker's mark?) Although, I suppose, both (if manufactured separately) could have been made in the same town / city, or region, potentially. We haven't yet been able to link it to a Black Country foundry so I thought I would cast the net wider and see if anyone recognises it. If anyone recognises it, it would be great to know more.
