Previous notes of call - below
We:
- ran through the attached SOM/FOM conference schedule (June 25-7th 2018 London) which has a thread on mental health. Suggestions for further speakers are welcome e.g. on the lines of a debate on Sharing an understanding of priorities in mental health?
- reviewed the attached article regarding the SOM/BPS mental health meet in October.
On the call we also discussed:
- That MH is the most common issue SOM members are facing in terms of workload - ranging from minor stress to psychosis and alcohol dependency
- Asking SOM members for examples of MH plans and workplace policies
- The role of OM in providing a good overview and specialist advice on MH in workplaces
- The value of Mental Health First Aid training to increase communication and insight and highlight services – with some concern about the evidence base
- Millennials view of stress and anxiety but also that there is increased awareness and reduced stigma in this area now
- Concerns about flexible working and new forms of work and impact on MH
- How we can support health professionals “care for the care givers”
It was noted that:
- FOM are planning to produce guidance on drugs and alcohol in 2018
- SOM recently met with the Royal College of Psychiatrists, with plans for a joint event in Autumn 2018; SOM also asked for speakers for SOM regional groups
