So is anyone in a position to be able to point this out to the obstetrician concerned, in a public space, so that people in general can be made aware that, while he may indeed be doing aspects of midwifery (as per the Lancet Series) he cannot legally practice as a midwife unless he has a formally awarded midwife qualification (and, indeed, without being trained as a midwife he is very unlikely to be able to pass the necessary examinations and practical assessments to be awarded such a qualification)?

All the best

The Midwife is a protected title under the Irish Nurses and Midwives Act (2011):

registered midwife”—

(a) before the registers establishment day, means a midwife whose name is entered in the midwives division of the register of nurses within the meaning of the Act of 1985, and

(b) on and after the registers establishment day, means a midwife whose name is entered in the midwives division of the register of nurses and midwives;

First Midwives Act in Ireland was in 1918

In my experience in America, obstetricians come from an education and training that focuses on diagnosis and treatment of disease.  That is why they are always looking for the complications in pregnancy and childbirth.  We, the midwives, come from a perspective of fostering and supporting a physiological process, i.e., that which women have the inherent ability to do well.  They are 2 different perspectives that I think are mutually exclusive, except in the hands of individuals who understand them and are able to go back and forth depending on the needs of the women.

Given the dominant medical model here in the US, that I think is being adopted in many countries, it is a constant challenge to remain true to the midwifery model of care.

And I think Jane presented the reality of our times re populism.  Pat

Dear Colleagues,

In a recent submission to the Irish Government's Health Committee on progress regarding implementation of the first National Maternity Strategy in 2016, a senior obstetrician, representing the Irish Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology suggested that he was a midwife as well as an obstetrician,  and adding insult to injury, he said that he was proud of it.

Do you share my outrage with this statement? Do obstetricians elsewhere share this view? What does this mean for working collaboratively?

I would appreciate your views on tackling this.

Kind Regards,

Margaret
