So is anyone in a position to be able to point this out to the obstetrician concerned, in a public space, so that people in general can be made aware that, while he may indeed be doing aspects of midwifery (as per the Lancet Series) he cannot legally practice as a midwife unless he has a formally awarded midwife qualification (and, indeed, without being trained as a midwife he is very unlikely to be able to pass the necessary examinations and practical assessments to be awarded such a qualification)? That is why they are always looking for the complications in pregnancy and childbirth. We, the midwives, come from a perspective of fostering and supporting a physiological process, i.e., that which women have the inherent ability to do well. They are 2 different perspectives that I think are mutually exclusive, except in the hands of individuals who understand them and are able to go back and forth depending on the needs of the women. Given the dominant medical model here in the US, that I think is being adopted in many countries, it is a constant challenge to remain true to the midwifery model of care. And I think Jane presented the reality of our times re populism. Do you share my outrage with this statement? Do obstetricians elsewhere share this view? What does this mean for working collaboratively? I would appreciate your views on tackling this.
