medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear George,

Glad to be of help. Hrabanus uses Cassian in a couple of places, but I’ve never tried to track down the specific family of MSS he had access to. I suspect the citations came from a notebook or florilegium he compiled while studying with Alcuin, so possibly a Tours MS.

There appear to be quite a few MSS of the Collationes, which one could never ascertain from Petschenig’s edition! Only a proper collation of all (or most) MSS will determine whether there was ever a single MS of the entire text. Cameron seems to think it might be possible, given what Cassian says himself at the end of one of the sections.

If I come up with more, I’ll let you know. Always useful to have such a list in any case.

Cheers,

Bill

Did I see your name on the sign-in sheet at PIMS recently?

Bill, you da man - thank you. Extremely interesting that at least in this list of 12 Conferences manuscripts, only two are complete, and there’s a tendency toward the latter part or two parts of this tripartite work. I wonder if originally this text would have tended to be produced in separate books, corresponding to the parts of the text, and perhaps many books containing Part 1 are not yet catalogued or have gone missing (or, who knows, were never made to match the other parts that were in fact copied).

Best wishes, George

George,

I just came across a list of MSS of this text here: http://www.earlymedievalmonasticism.org/texts/Cassian-Collationes.html

As with Jane’s suggestions (and others sent to me offlist), these are wowser - truly useful! I can’t wait to dig in to each of these.

Best wishes, George

I find mirabileweb.it a reasonably complete starting point for many things.

And there is an article (a note, really, but worth reading) by Alan Cameron: " The Transmission of Cassian" Revue d'histoire des textes, n.s. 6 (2011) 361-365.

Mirabileweb lists just one MS. There is one critical edition, ed. by Michael Petschenig for CSEL 13 (1886), who lists just six MSS. That edition was reprinted in 2004 with additional bibliography p. 713.

In his note, Cameron discusses several later copies (Oxford, Balliol College, MS 275, a 14th century copy also listed in mirabileweb.it; and Manchester, John Rylands Library, MS lat 49) both of which contain late antique subscriptions added by a person who corrected his copy with the help of three assistants.

You might also go through the six volumes of Kristeller’s Iter Italicum.

A search of the OPAC catalogue of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek produces 4 copies, and a search of e-codices (a database of MSS in Swiss librarie: https://www.e-codices.unifr.ch/en) produces numerous hits. And of course there is Gallica (www.gallica.fr) [search for Cassianus].

So it might require some searching, but those are starting points.
