Carleton University's Department of Geography and Environmental Studies invites applications for a one-year term appointment Instructor I position in Urban Geography/Urban Studies (Cities and Social Justice), commencing on July 1, 2019.

Applications are invited from individuals able to teach courses in our BA program, particularly in our new Concentration in Urban Geography. This position requires lecture or seminar format teaching in four courses, directed studies or thesis supervision, and time dedicated to developing a new course, Cities and Urbanization (GEOG 1023) in collaboration with another faculty member. Assigned courses may include but are not limited to the following (approximate enrolments in brackets; F = fall term; W = winter term; FW = fall and winter terms):

GEOG 1023F - Cities and Urbanization (0.5 cr, 120 students)

FYSM 1107FW - Social Justice and the City (1.0 cr, 30 students)

GEOG 3024W - Understanding Globalization (0.5 cr, 25 students)

GEOG 4023F - Special Topics on the City (0.5 cr, 30 students)

0.5 cr - New course preparation for GEOG 1023F

0.5 cr - Undergraduate directed studies/thesis supervisions

About the Academic Unit:

Carleton's Department of Geography and Environmental Studies (DGES) offers the following degrees: BA Environmental Studies; BA Geography, BSc Physical Geography; BA and BSc Geomatics; and Bachelor's in Globalization and International Studies. It also delivers MA, MSc and PhD programs in Geography and hosts Carleton's interdisciplinary Masters programs in Northern Studies. The Department is home to about 400 undergraduate majors and 60 graduate students, and is committed to teaching and research that focuses on theoretical and applied aspects of interdisciplinary scholarship. Qualifications:

Applicants must have a PhD degree in Geography, Urban Studies, or other relevant field, or a similar Master’s degree plus relevant experience. The successful applicant will have: excellent teaching skills, university teaching experience, and specialized knowledge of urban research and issues related to social justice, social movements, urban inequality, and global issues; capability to engage and inspire students in academic work; and strong inter-personal, communication and collaboration skills. Instructors contribute to service, including our recruitment and retention efforts, departmental meetings, and program development. Carleton offers teaching enhancement through our Educational Development Centre and other services.
