Symposium on 'Aotearoa New Zealand after the 15 March Terror Attacks'
University of Waikato Islamic Studies Group,
Hamilton, New Zealand
Wednesday May 1st , 2019

The University of Waikato Islamic Studies Group, in conjunction with the Centre for Social Justice, is planning to host a symposium on 'Aotearoa New Zealand after the 15 March Terror Attacks'. The event is going to be held on Wednesday May 1st at the University of Waikato. Please find following more details about the symposium’s theme and important dates:

Some scholars have highlighted similarities between the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the March 15 terror attacks in Christchurch, both being unprecedented in the history of two countries, and both sharing message of hatred of others. However, the way that the two nations have responded could not be more different. The US was swift in building an alliance of ‘us vs them’ dividing all people around the world into 'us' or 'them'. That division caused endless wars, bloodshed around the globe, and the highly controversial Muslim travel ban, demonstrating how the nation was defining itself. The New Zealand PM on the other hand, called the targeted community ‘us’. Messages of support poured in from all corners of the world, some of these were far beyond what would be expected in normal situations.  The Archbishop of Canterbury called hatred of Muslims ‘blasphemy’, something that would theologically be challenging to do before the incident. The aftermath of the Christchurch incidents have left us in a new era.

This symposium is aiming to examine characteristics and implications of this new era. While ‘intercultural relations in New Zealand after the March 15 terror attacks’ is the main theme for the symposium other contributions are also welcomed.

If you are interested in presenting, please send your abstract of around 150 words and a brief CV to the organisers by no later than April 15 2019 to: [log in to unmask]
