Dear all,

These specimens are quite complete for routine morphological identification. Based on their size, proportions and gross morphology of the dorsal side, they can be firmly identified as minke whales Balaenoptera acutorostrata (or bonaerensis). The photo of the ear bones could also be helpful for complicated cases.

All the best,
Pavel

Hi Aurelie et al.,

For osteological identification Youri van den Hurk <[log in to unmask]> may be enthusiastic about a visit.

For aDNA, Vicki Szabo <[log in to unmask]> and Brenna (McLeod) Frasier <[log in to unmask]> have an ongoing NSF project - and the SEACHANGES Marie Skłodowska-Curie ITN may soon lead to capacity within its network. There are several options for ZooMs (e.g. York, Copenhagen, Manchester and soon Cambridge).

Perhaps this is also a good place to remind everyone that the abstract deadline is 1 MAY for the ICAZ Marine Mammal Research Group workshop (Cambridge 20-21 Sept 2019):
