Sorry to hear a protective layer wasn't used. I just asked a conservator friend of mine who works at the National Museum here in Edinburgh. She says there is no easy solution and this is definitely a conservator issue. The marks however could be reduced. She suggests trying a solvent gel/poultice to try and draw it out.
