Hi,

Maybe you have had this suggestion before, as you have deleted some of the pictures of no. 11113: Because of the two teeth in each mandible (both the anterior appear to be missing), it is most likely Arnoux's beaked whale (Berardius arnuxii) which is known from the New Zealand surrounings, see https://collections.tepapa.govt.nz/object/709573

The second specimen, no. 11110, is most likely a Southern right whale, Eubalena australis. A top view drawing of the Northern right whale skull, Eubalena glacialis, was published by Remington Kellogg (1928): History of Whales. Their adaption to life in the water, Quart. Rev. Biol. Pp. 174-208 (fig. 19 p. 189), and reproduced, e.g. in Pierre-P. Grassé (Ed.): Traité de zoologie, T. XVII (1), 1955, as fig. 374 (p. 347). The two Eubalena species (or subspecies, one living in the Northern hemisphere and the other in the Southern) display only slight differences in cranial morphology, the Northern right whale attaining somewhat greater length than the Southern one.

Hi all,

So, as suggested, I've added some pictures of the scapula and of the temporal fossa to the album on zoobook (http://zooarchaeology.ning.com/photo/albums/whales). I also want to focus on the specimen n°11110 so I deleted the other pictures (specimen n°11113).

Just so you have an idea what we are dealing with, I also added 2 picture taken in the room we are working in, and all the (big!) skeletons involved... It's fun working with whole bones/individuals for once!

Best,
Aurélie
