For primary schoolers, I’ve yet to read the books they’re based on, but the Octonauts series by Meomi (Vicki Wong and Michael Murphy) showcases marine biology in a surprisingly factual way (up to a point). And the engineer and computer scientist on the crew are both female characters.

If it hasn't already been recommended I would suggest:
'The immortal life of henrietta lacks'
It highlights the wrongs of science and how a newer generation of scientists looked again at henrietta's contribution to science (also a great basis to discuss 'ethics'!)

Here’s a few more, a google search will find them.
- The Woman Who Rode a Shark
- Fantastically Great Women Who Worked Wonders
- Little People, BIG DREAMS series (e.g. Jane Goodall)
- Women in Science: 50 Fearless Pioneers Who Changed the World
A friend of mine down-under, George Aranda runs an incredible site that should be a goldmine for this:

Hi Laura,
Here at Glasgow Science Centre we are in the midst of writing several stories which explore all of these themes in some way. They'll be distributed as digital resources for teachers as part of an Erasmus+ project later in the year.
Id be more than happy to share these when they are finished, with anyone who would be interested.
The protagonists of the stories are all based on real life scientists currently active in academia and industry.
Happy to chat off list if you have any queries :)
Cheers

Hi Hive Mind,
UWE Science Communication Unit and Curiosity Connections Bristol are linking to Bristol Reading City, and we would like to promote books which challenge stereotypes of who scientists are, or what they do. We’re aiming at kids of all ages, from birth to 18. We know about:
- Rosie Revere Engineer
- Ada Twist Scientist
- Iggy Peck Architect
- Bedtime Stories for Rebel Girls/Boys
- The famous women series e.g. Marie Curie
We wondered if people have other suggestions. This could include:
- Women/girls as protagonists (i.e. doing things in a story, not being a bystander or helper)
- Scientists not wearing white coats
- People from other ethnicities
- Books demonstrating curiosity, and not giving up after failure.
Please email [log in to unmask] with ideas!
Laura Fogg-Rogers, UWE Bristol
