I agree Anne; and partnership working with organisations I think is key, especially with those that have in house OH provision for staff. Case management for those on sick leave would be a united approach and one that would hopefully in the longer term benefit all, all round.

Re: [OCC-HEALTH] Being launched today Good point, but it doesn't have to be a F/T post. Could even be a nurse practitioner who is dual qualified.

Given that GP practices are individual practices will they want to fund on OH Nurse to spend time in their practice? Yet again it's down to central funding/ commisioning of services.

I agree
It is alarming to see still mostly us older OHa’s and not enough younger ones joining the discipline.

Someone e I have recruited recently said she had NO OH I put on her nursing course which was only in 2015!
It’s no wonder more aren’t coming Into OH .

Hi all,

In my opinion if there were only enough OH Nurses every GP practice could happily have several on board to deal with OH advice and fit notes .

However with a diminishing number of OH Nurses - about 3,500 as SpCPHN - OH on the NMC register( maybe less)  plus ??? who knows how many in practice with  good relevant qualifications in OH and some 12,000 GP practices ...I think .... in the UK this is just not feasible at present.

My numbers are guesstimates happy to be corrected

We should all look to encourage more nurses to become OH practitioners - a wonderful happy career helping people to stay in and return to work and keeping them safe at work!

Sunday lecture over.. sorry

Kind regards to all

Totally agree Deb!!

I have said this for many years; there’s such obvious benefits having an OHA attached to a GP practise, as are the benefits for partnership working between us and GPs/PNs if OHAs are not directly employed by / attached to the surgery.

I would at some point like to arrange an event local to me for GPs to promote and discuss partnership working when dealing with their patients / our employees.....

Hi all

To add a question to this topic, at the H&WB at Work conference I heard an excellent OT speaking about a pilot, with OTs working in primary care (in GP practices), assessing and advising on fitness to work.

Brilliant scheme, but I can't help thinking that as a profession, we're missing a trick! As specialist OHA/N practitioners, I think we could and should be working alongside GPs too.

Who agrees or disagrees with me?

Hi all

Am I missing something or does the checklist not say anything about:
  1. Asking if the patient has an occupational health service?
  2. If they do, suggesting they get a referral or seek the involvement of this service?

I admit I have only read the checklist but that is probably the limit of what most others will read. We know a lot don’t have access to OH but a lot do and surely the first answer to the question “How can I best help my patients with work issues given that I am not trained in occupational health?” is “Do you have an Occupational Health Service and if you do, go and talk to them or get your manager to talk to them?

Thanks

Lindsey
