Dear Colleagues - all welcome ... 4pm Wednesday 20th March 2019 - De Montfort University, Clephan 3.01 Hannah Gogan - Too Big to Fail: The Fate of Financial Journalism In the years since The Great Recession of 2008, the appetite for financial journalism has never been higher. Businesses and financial institutions play a larger role than ever in our lives, shaping public policy and redefining how we consume and understand information that affects our livelihoods and material well-being. At the same time, trust in the press is at an all time low, and the financial press is dogged with questions about the quality and independence of their reporting. Financial reporting is a beat notorious for it's tricky access and a need to please difficult and demanding PRs. Looking particularly at major British financial scandals since the great recession, this presentation will seek to understand the biases inherent in financial reporting. Access to unbiased financial information has long been regarded as a cornerstone of liberal capitalism; this presentation will explore whether or not that flow of information can be maintained in a media age increasingly dominated by privileged access to information and the powerful domination of financial PR, as well as best practises for journalists and media critics working in this field.
