What’s happened in Christchurch is simply awful, and I’m sure there isn’t anyone on this list who isn’t shocked by what’s happened.

But I also think it’s important for journalism students to know and understand how to report such events, so as not to glamorise them or the shooters, or produce/inspire copy-cats. It’s been shown that how such events are reported in the media can have these effects, so it’s imperative we remain mindful of, and educated in, the best ways to avoid these negative repercussions associated with such journalism.

Hi

I echo the support for Ann from Alex, Megan and Jim. I collaborate with Ann on research projects relating to trauma and sudden death and throughout our work together I have found her to be highly sensitive and caring towards those affected by traumatic events.

I believe she has acted out of a genuine desire to help colleagues who may be struggling to deal with questions from journalism students about how they should deal with this atrocity both as citizens of New Zealand and as future journalists. We expect our students to interview the bereaved after personal tragedies – it’s part of the journalist’s job – so as academics we should do our best to prepare them for such tasks by being willing to talk to them about grief, loss and the aftermath of terrorist attacks, mass shootings and other traumatic events.

Kind regards

Sallyanne

Hi,

I agree with Alex, as a colleague of Ann I know that she would have had the best intentions with this email. From speaking with her previously, an aspect of this book is very much about helping journalism students report on horrific events such as this in a way that does not leave them traumatised and suffering themselves, and I’m sure this is why she felt it was of use to those who will be dealing with the event as it unfolds.

From a colleague in Christchurch, NZ - I have his permission to share - he said they need all the support they can get:

“This is really the end of innocence for NZ. We’ve joined the real world. So tragic, so sad. We are all in shock and will have great difficulty coming to terms with it all.
Also for us, poor Christchurch. The earthquakes and now this. “

Hi,

in agreement with the responses (that our thoughts must be with the victims and their families and the wider community) but also in support of Ann's sharing of materials, if NZ and Australian academics are walking into classes with journalism students on Monday or next week, as undoubtedly they will be, and are asking for help in preparing their students to be as kind, sensitive and useful as they can be in their reporting of this horrific terror attack and loss of life, if I were them, I'd certainly want to have the best resources available to do that teaching with.

Tone is always lost in digital communications and I can see how reading of this as a 'teachable moment' didn't come across well at all; but knowing Ann and her work I would suggest the offer was made with appropriate intentions.

Thank you, Heather. You have voiced the concerns and sentiments of so many on this list.

Our thoughts should be with those who suffered this atrocity, not to consider its teachability.

For those of you who may be using the horrible mass shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand as a teachable moment, please consider using the chapter on ‘Reporting Mass Shootings’ by Glynn Greensmith in our recently published collection, Ethical Reporting of Sensitive Topics, published by Routledge and edited by Dr. Ann Luce of Bournemouth University. There are a wide variety of topics covered in this volume, which include reporting on suicide, natural disasters, sexual abuse, climate change, gang violence, and different cultures.

All chapters are written by journalists-turned-academics and provide case studies of best and worst practice covering these topics.
