​Dear colleagues


This is not my subject, and I am speaking with a lack of knowledge of the field as it is established in academia, but I have a different view in this discussion. I say that making positive use of a terrible situation seems to me not only the best way to bring respect to the victims but is also absolutely our duty as educators.


What's the received wisdom on the time frame for grieving? Who decides when it's OK to start teaching about a current dreadful event? Grieving doesn't stop us from learning - politicians love it when we let the anger and pain die down and go about our daily lives as if nothing has happened. It's the regular mantra isn't it?, whenever something like this happens. "We won't let the terrorists win! We'll catch these criminals! We won't let our lives be disrupted!" Excuse me, your life just got disrupted again and someone else's life was lost. Don't go about your daily life as if nothing happened.


I actually think academics are generally very quiet about the real difficulties of this world, including ironically, the degradation of their own profession, and are often speaking only to each other in polite ways that won't offend their own multiple sensibilities. So, I would argue, speak now! Teach now! If it hurts us and our students to talk about these horrible aspects of our world while the emotions are still raw, so be it - we should hurt. That's showing real respect for the people who have lost their lives or been injured.
