Picking up Tony’s email, this is a little-known but fascinating aspect of the First World War. If you’re interested in the West Indian experience of WW1, including the Taranto mutiny of 1918, please also take a look at the ‘Away from the Western Front’ project’s music pages, where you can listen to a song commissioned from composer Chris Hoban, whose grandfather served with the British West Indies Regiment. The web page includes versions of the song by choir, soloist and brass band, along with free-to-download scores and practice tracks. In the words of one of the choirs which performed the piece: ‘For many of the choir it was the highlight of the work we have done over the last four years. The song went down well with the audience, who were proud to have included a song with this content within our service’. See https://awayfromthewesternfront.org/projects/national-music-project/.

Subject: Mutiny resource now available: Black WW1 veterans tell their story

Dear Gemmers

With the WW1 centenary focus has turned to legacies... The reversion of “Mutiny” our documentary resource on the Black British West Indian experience of WW1 is now on general release for streaming audiences. We hope you will find it interesting and useful. Links to access ‘Mutiny’ on Amazon Prime, or, Vimeo on Demand, can be found on our webpage – http://www.sweetpatootee.co.uk/work/mutiny/

Mutiny includes extracts from the UK’s only collection of video oral testimonies recorded with Black British West Indian veterans, along with a wealth of supporting sources. We welcome feedback from any all audience groups. But we are especially keen to hear from anyone else exploring how Mutiny can inspire and/or bring to life interpretation linking uncomfortable (National) history and modern identity and diversity - for example:

Best wishes

Tony
