A rare royal charter which was issued exactly 891 years ago has been discovered in Durham.
The document, which was not previously known to have survived, carries the seal of King John and is dated March 26 1200 – the first year of the monarch’s reign.
And, according to a medieval history expert, the document can be seen as a form of “who’s who” of Northern England at the turn of the 13th century.
