The MRC Biostatistics Unit is a leading centre of innovative biostatistics research. An exciting short-term opportunity has arisen for a talented applied statistician to work on predicting the risk of relapse and infection in patients with Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV), under the supervision of Dr Jessica Barrett. The successful candidate will also collaborate with Dr Mark McClure from the Department of Medicine, University of Cambridge.

AAV is an organ-threatening and life-threatening multisystem autoimmune disease. When making treatment decisions the benefits of relapse prevention must be weighed up against the increased susceptibility to infectious adverse events associated with long-term medication use. The aim of this project is to develop a combined relapse and infection risk prediction model to help guide clinical decision making.

Funding is available for this project for 3 months from the beginning of July 2019. The successful candidate will be appointed to either a Research Assistant or Research Associate position. Appointment at Research Associate is dependent on having a PhD, where a PhD has yet to be awarded or submitted, appointment will initially be made at Research Assistant and amended to Research Associate when the PhD is awarded. Alternatively the appointment can be made at Research Assistant if you have either a degree (degree and/or Master's) in a relevant area or equivalent experience. Previous experience of survival analysis is essential for this role, preferably in an applied setting. Experience of building and validating risk prediction models would be advantageous. The successful candidate will also be an experienced user of statistical software such as R or Stata. An interest in the use of cutting-edge statistical methods to answer substantive questions in the field of medicine and a creative approach to problem-solving are also essential.
