Many of the laboratories in MetBioNet (UK metabolic network of laboratories) quantitate both plasma & urine citrulline as part of the amino acid profile. These are available as you will be aware in the metabolic laboratory in Bristol. When reporting amino acid profiles overall assessment of the whole profile in relation to the clinical details supplied will offer diagnostic/clinically relevant information. In cases of known intestinal failure where arginine/ornithine/citrulline concentrations are particularly relevant these should be considered as part of the clinical interpretation. As specific markers for detecting intestinal failure the sensitivity of using these amino acids is to my knowledge uncertain.
Best wishes

Dear Mailbase,

Does anyone measure Citrulline (either alone or part of a more detailed amino acid profile) in their laboratory for use as a marker in intestinal failure/intestinal absorption?

Many thanks
