Thanks, Lizzie, for putting the reference up. The work is on BoneCommons, so is easily available. Search Jones GG 2007. It’s two subjects, first the accessory pillar (which is very variable, hence our work on CEJ) then the M1 M2 differences.
Note that the reference, extra information and photographs are on the pages at the end. I’d be interested to hear if people have found it useful. Especially at early wear stages, as will be the case with weaning, for Jakes’ site, I’d expect identification to be very much worth trying. Try both morphological points (a – f, p.623-625) and crown height (Fig.241, Table 134), anterior width WA and cervical length CervL (Fig.247).

In my experience the separation of loose cattle M1s and 2s (e.g. using biometry) is not very easy, although I know that Gill Jones outlines a method in this report (I`m sorry I don`t have a copy!):
