Hi Andrew,
Thank you so much for your points on this.
Visualizing the causal pathway from program resources to outcome inspired by a stage model seems really relevant and interesting.
Again, thankyou for responding on my question. I really appreciate your qualified comments.
Regards,
Laerke

There are many on this list with more experience than I, but my first reaction was that both mechanisms are one and the same. I can’t see a great deal of difference – particularly between a sense of belonging and fitting in. Perhaps there is something more abstract that encompasses most if not all mechanisms you refer to below… such as ‘inclusion’?
Thanks for raising an interesting conceptual issue!
Best wishes,
Andy

Subject: Casually related mechanisms in program theory development

Dear all,
I'm working on a realist evaluation of a social network site promoting social connections for mental health promotion. Trying to develop my program theory, I have a question I can't really figure out. Hopefully this is the right place to ask it.
The question is, if generative mechanisms can be causally related to other generative mechanisms in a program? In my case an example is:
(Initiative) Digital initiative that promotes social connectedness - (generative mechanism) Sense of fitting in/value/acceptance - (generative mechanism) sense of belonging - (outcome) positive mental health.
As sense of fitting/value acceptance in is related to people's the reasoning within situations provoked by the initiative, I believe it is not a context of sense of belonging, but a generative mechanism causally related to the generative mechanism, belonging. But am I right about that? What do you think?
In case I'm right, if you have any ideas on good ways to visualize program theories with long causal pathways with casually related mechanisms (perhaps with time perspective) or ideas for readings on this, I would be very grateful.
Thankyou,
Laerke
