I think Klauss Krippendorf can offer first-hand information as an Ulm graduate.

Best wishes,

Lubomir

Subject: The Ulm School

Many thanks, dear Ursula, for this long post! Quite generous of you, and I deeply appreciate!

But once more, you close saying:
" the ′Ulm Model′ continues to have a major influence on international design education.... many of the former teachers and students, went to other schools and developed their careers at other places all over the world. So the influence of the short period of Ulm school of design is still remarkable."

I am sincerely curious and eager to learn more about that influence 'throughout the world'.Three decades ago, I personally and immensely benefited from a short 6 months training I received from Michel Millot, a graduate from Ulm just before it closed. MIchel and his team had just opened the then Centre de création industrielle, at Centre Goerges Pompidou. And as well, approaches were made at the same time for an eventual collaboration between the Centre and the École de Design Industriel at l'Université de Montréal, where I was then ending my training. And I was sent to Paris, in a plan that I would, on my return, introduce the "Ulm way" (???) into my Alma Mater. This didn't materialize, and short after Michel and the two collaborators left the Beaubourg CCI.
They immediately started ISUC (Institut des sciences de l'usage et de la conception), trying to infuse and expand the 'Ulm way/model" through a private practice, but this venture didn't last long neither.

After all those successive failures and closures that I personally know of, combined with the two other not long lived cases also reported by Tiphaine, I want to know if, outside Germany and France, and Australia (David Sless), there have been more successful influence cases of the 'Ulm Model' and approach to design. Dear Klaus, your input in/from the USA. please?!

Perhaps the influence has been rather diffuse and indirect, through individuals developing new disciplines and approaches such as Systems design, Design Management, etc., as you repeatedly mention in your post?

And now to the list,.can we get more testimonies to learn further from?
Second, are there among us those who think the 'Ulm Model' is worth to be revived and pursued? How and where that could be?

Once more many thanks to you, Ursula, and to all!
François
