The Office for National Statistics (ONS), in partnership with the Government Statistical Service (GSS), is transforming the way we produce population and migration statistics using administrative data, to better meet the needs of our users. We have published an engagement report that updates users on our population and migration statistics transformation journey and next steps, and seeks feedback on our future plans.

 

We have also published our latest blog from Jay Lindop who discusses the progress so far.

 

• Our latest research shows the progress we have made towards a new approach for producing population stocks and flows using administrative data, by bringing more sources together to fill gaps in coverage.

 

• We have also produced a series of case studies that put a spotlight on what different administrative data sources tell us about international migration.

 

• This report provides an update on our Migration statistics transformation programme and builds on the previous research delivered through this and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Administrative Data Census project.

 

• We are still developing our future system and are in the process of acquiring the further administrative data sources needed to deliver this. We plan to publish our next update on this programme of work in spring 2019.

 

• We will also be carrying out further work to compare what existing survey sources (International Passenger Survey (IPS), Labour Force Survey (LFS), Annual Population Survey (APS)) tell us about population and migration. We will update on our findings in February 2019, alongside the latest Migration Statistics Quarterly Report, with conclusions following later this year.
