And somewhere I have read of Cistercian lay brothers in south Wales - Margam? - in early C14 going on strike for more beer. Can't track the reference down but will have another look.

Key thing about a lot of these is that they predate the demographic collapse of the C14 which is generally thought to have created recruitment problems with lay brothers, and consequential stroppiness among those that were recruited.
