Conflict, Memory and Migration: Northern Irish Migrants and the Troubles in Great Britain

The Centre for Memory, Narrative and Histories at the University of Brighton is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for this three-year AHRC-funded research project working in partnership with the University of Manchester. The aim of the project is to examine the complex and distinctive interrelationship between the Troubles in Northern Ireland (c.1969-98) and the shaping of distinctive forms of Northern Irish migrant subjectivity in Great Britain. The project combines research methods derived from oral/life history, memory studies, cultural studies and cultural history. In-depth interviews will be conducted with subjects in London, Manchester and Glasgow, using this three-way comparison to illuminate the social and cultural implications of the Troubles within different regional contexts. In addition, discourse analysis will be used to account for the shifting ways in which the Troubles and Northern Irish ethnicities have been represented within print and visual media in Britain.

You will be responsible for interviewing and archival and library research in London, and will contribute to the project’s co-produced findings, outputs, and impact and engagement activities. Working under the guidance of Professor Graham Dawson, you will join a small project team together with Professor Liam Harte and Dr Barry Hazley at Manchester. Based at the Centre for Memory, Narrative and Histories, which Professor Dawson directs, you will have opportunity to participate in its research culture and to contribute to its programme of events and activities. It is envisaged that the post would suit applicants who have recently been awarded their PhD (or are close to completing post-viva minor corrections) and are just starting out on their research career.

The role will involve regular periods of research in London, occasional travel to Manchester, and a three-month summer internship at Healing Through Remembering, a not-for-profit organisation in Belfast.

We anticipate interviews will be held in the week beginning 25th March at the University of Brighton. Please note that this post is full-time and fixed term for 3 years, to commence on 1st April 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
