ERC Early Career grants are open to applicants for xx years after PhD with an extra year for each baby you’ve had. It was once suggested to me that having another baby would be a good idea as it would increase the time I had to get an ERC proposal in! Bonkers career advice aside – age limits are there with good intentions to support ‘early career researchers’. It’s only a good thing that increasingly it is being recognised that your early career doesn’t have to be in your thirties (I know someone who just got a PhD in their seventies). However folk recently out of a PhD need mentoring and peer support, so events like YES are important. Many professional societies/groups have, in recent years, redefined their criteria for their similar 'Early Career' awards, lectures, meetings, etc, recognising that many people have ‘non-linear’ career trajectories, and that imposition of age limits disproportionally discriminate against, for example, women scientists, given they often take on most of the caring responsibility for children. Furthermore, given this looks like a multinational group/meeting, you are surely aware that different countries have different durations of undergraduate and postgraduate education, meaning people obtain certain qualifications at markedly different ages. I would suggest that criteria should be based around time worked, full-time equivalent, post-PhD (or something similar), rather than simply “under X years old”… Thoughts?
