Hi Heather,

As you mentioned in the email, it’s recommended that communication aids and mounts are removed during transport. A risk assessment should be completed that should address issues like this, and involve the wheelchair provider. I would refer to the PMG guidance.

It’s recommended all accessories (like trays; I would include AAC device and mounts in this) are removed and stowed elsewhere in the vehicle during transport. Paper-based aac might be more appropriate for use in transport.

Some people like a device ‘park’ position for a high-tech device, perhaps behind the seat, attached to the backrest. If is done, any risks would need to be identified and managed.

Some people may have seen this very sad BBC article, and of course it does not explain the circumstances, but it is very relevant to any risk assessment:

I think it’s likely to be best stored in a bag elsewhere in the vehicle.

Hi.
Are there implications for the rear passenger, in the event of crash, for a tablet mounted on the back of a head rest?

I do recognise it is frequently done.

Of course, if there is no back seat, there is no such concern.

If the joystick control is via the Bluetooth module, so there is no direct connection at all between the Surface and the chair, then theoretically you can do what you like with the computer. The real concern is leaving the chair powered up during transport, made even more of an issue if it has tilt/recline function....

Hi

I have been asked by a client about utilising their communication aid whilst driving. Of course mounting poles for w/chairs are not crash tested and therefore can't be used in transport however I was wondering whether anyone has mounted a communication aid to the back of the head rest or similar set up for use in transit. The client is using integrated joystick access via R-Net set up through powered chair and using a Surface Pro. Any advice or case examples would be very much appreciated.

Many Thanks
