Does anyone have any data on deposits associated with urban tanneries? I have an assemblage from a 19th c. urban deposit in Richmond, Virginia (US). There are three butchers and two tanneries within a two-three block radius. I think the tanneries were working mainly with cow hides. Also, does anyone have any references on the history of hide tanning they could recommend? Thanks.
